Become a Trustee

Trustees play a vital role in helping Dòchas Carers Centre support unpaid carers across Mid Argyll, Kintyre and the Islands. As a Trustee, you'll help shape the future of the organisation, ensuring we continue to provide high quality services and remain focused on the needs of local carers.

You don't need previous board or charity experience to become a Trustee. We're looking for people who share our values, care about supporting unpaid carers and are willing to contribute their skills, experience and ideas. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences.

What Do Trustees Do?

Working alongside fellow Trustees, you will:

•    Help set the strategic direction of the organisation
•    Ensure Dòchas is well governed and financially sustainable
•    Monitor performance and progress towards our strategic objectives
•    Support, challenge and oversee the work of the Manager and staff team
•    Help ensure carers' voices continue to influence our work and decision making

Trustees are responsible for governance, oversight and strategic direction. The operational management of the charity is delegated to the Manager.

I’ve known about Dòchas since it began over 25 years ago. Having been a carer myself, I understand the importance of supporting unpaid carers.  Being a trustee gives me the chance to give something back and play a part in a charity which provides such an essential service. I enjoy bringing my experience to the Board but also gain a lot from working alongside other Trustees.                       Maureen Mackintosh

To me, being a member of the Board of Trustees for the Dòchas Carers Centre, has been an experience of gradual formation.

Knowing nothing of what the role entailed, it became a “work in progress”.  Sometimes very daunting, but always finding support and encouragement from the fellow members of the Board.  At times, muddling along and learning as I went!

Gradually over time, I began to understand the huge importance of the work the staff and volunteers of Dòchas put in and it has become a privilege and honour to help oversee their commitment.

There is still much more to learn and consolidate my role as a Trustee, but now I feel confident in offering time and commitment to a team of dedicated people who do nothing short of gaining my admiration and, in return, I gain equally in the satisfaction that my contribution, whether large or small, helps to keep such a worthwhile organisation running.

The old saying “If I can do it, then anybody can,” is certainly true in my case.  Do, please get in touch if you are interested in finding out more, we will only be too pleased to chat with you.                         Ros Box

Carer's Support

  • Do you look after a relative, partner or friend who needs support because of age, physical or learning disability or illness including mental ill health?
  • Who is a Carer? A carer is a family member, partner, relative or friend supporting someone who needs help to manage a long-term condition, disability, physical or mental health problem or addiction.

Dochas Carers Centre is an independent charity. We help and support unpaid carers by providing information and guidance which can make life better. There are many carers who live many miles from services and access can prove difficult or impossible. We have dedicated Support Workers who provide support to carers throughout Mid Argyll, Kintyre and the Islands.

You can call in person, phone us, request a home visit or make an appointment to speak with one of our staff during the opening hours of the centre.
